Blueberry season is upon us. Or ratherĀ was upon us! There’s a lake near us that is overflowing with wild blueberries and isĀ the place to pick blueberries. If you get to them in time. I haven’t kept good records of when we have picked for the past few years so I guestimated that it was time. I texted one of my friends that I know picks blueberries every year and she had picked 3 pounds already! 3 pounds of those little suckers! Dang! I needed to get on it. But I was picking up one of my nephews for a visit and had to put it off for a few days. He was very excited to pick blueberries so even though it was raining, we decided it was a task that needed to be tackled regardless. It takes us an hour to drive to the blueberry patch now. Our road is closed and we have a 15 minute detour plus then a 30 minute or so drive from there. But it’s on back roads so it’s fun. So we loaded up on PB&J sandwiches, a bottle of water, and our baskets and set off on our adventure.

What an adventure it was! It was sunny on the way down but as soon as we got there and started picking, it started raining. That didn’t dampen our spirits! We were there to get blueberries, darn it. Of course the blueberries were near the end and had been picked over. It took us an hour to pick what little you see in the basket above. But I love my nephew’s attitude! He wasn’t discouraged. He kept saying that we had a lot of blueberries. His attitude was contagious. Of course I wanted to fill that basket full so I could make all the blueberry stuff, but we ended up with about a half gallon. Enough to make pancakes for dinner and then some syrup. He said he wanted to make syrup and take it home to his family. And why not? We’ll process that today and put the rest in the freezer for a special treat this winter.

We’re off to make blueberry syrup, rocky road ice cream, and put some basil in the dehydrator. I’m also nursing Elsie, the chicken. I think she’s just molting, again, but I’m not entirely sure. So I have her on antibiotics and vitamins just to give her a boost in case she isn’t just molting. It’s been raining here for the past few days. I’m worried about the container garden, especially since one of the containers is now growing mushrooms! What’s a girl to do? Just keep on keeping on.
