Garden Update

I've been steadily working on the garden. Everything has been planted (see here and here for those updates), but the space is nowhere near what I dreamed of it being! I mean, it's fine. But really I'm dreaming of a little oasis where I can go knit, sit by a fire pit, have coffee, or drink a glass of wine. But I've been working on it. I have most of the containers up off the asphalt. I just traded for a little red wagon. How cute! I planted the pumpkin seeds inside so they are slowly sprouting. We're going today to get some more supplies--fencing to do the back fence, trellis for various projects, and other things to move forward on the gardening project. I'm teaching a class this week on Seasonal Eating and one thing I mention is that gardening can be inside too. Don't forget about your houseplants and/or starting things inside. Like this avocado pit. I have tried for years to start a tree from scratch, not because I think I'll get avocados, but because I just like the looks of them. Well, I finally did it! Now we're just waiting for the next stages (thankfully someone on Instagram told me what to do. I was all set to stick this puppy in some dirt, but apparently you add dirt in stages once the stem gets leaves. Thank goodness for Insta!).

And see this blueberry 'bush'? I found a bunch of wild blueberries growing right next to where I planted the cultivate berries! They're only 6 inches tall (hence the 'bush') but I think it's because they've been mown down every year. And the surrounding weeds are much, much taller blocking out the natural sunlight. I have big ideas for the berry patch and will update you on that later.

Speaking of things growing but being blocked by other, taller things...we found this apple tree growing behind the tennis court, but it's being blocked out on all sides, except this side, by poplar trees. The tree is behind the tennis court, which I need to clean up around anyway, so we're going to take out a couple of the trees that are crowding out the apples.

And, finally, I would encourage you to watch this video to find out what happened on the tennis court this past week! I went a little crazy and started ripping up the asphalt without really thinking it through (shocker, I know! That tends to be how I roll). And I also explain a lot of what is happening with the tennis court-turned-garden/sanctuary. It's long, but I think it's worth it.
