Homestead Update #31
Friends! Here we are ready for another weekly update. It's been such a busy week! I'm excited to share all about the garden, chickens, and everything else that's been happening on and off the homestead. Go grab your coffee and let's chat.
Garden
I'm still plugging away at the garden. I think I will be for the rest of camp season! Isn't that the case? I'm combating weeds but they're mostly easy to control in the raised beds. It's the weeds under the mulch that's giving me a hard time. I've decided to just lay down landscape fabric over the parts where it's really bad and add more mulch on top. I had this hairbrained idea of pulling up all the weeds and moving the mulch then putting landscape fabric down but it didn't take long for me to realize that that was a hairbrained idea! LOL.
I'll keep you posted on what we harvest. There are several things that I can start harvesting next week. Stay tuned! And unfortunately, I haven't been so good at taking pictures but I'll try to do better!! I'll give you pictures of Anna Lee instead!!
Chickens
The chickens had a little health issue but we're on the mend. I had to give them all baths! They were not a fan. I'll have to bath them every week until we get the issue taken care of. But they're doing good. I'm still only getting one egg a day. I think I had one day where there were 2 eggs. And I also don't collect the eggs on my day off--whoever takes care of the chickens takes the eggs for the day. But, y'all, I'm so happy to have chickens again. Even if it's only for the summer. I'll take it!
Currently
I think I forgot to mention that I've been to see about three movies lately. Oh wait. No, I totally mentioned one movie here. But there's been more movies with a new group of ladies. We went to see Petite Maman on Monday and then on Friday we went to see the new Elvis movie. I loved both! It's so nice to be able to get a group of ladies together and go do something fun. I still have a lot of things on my to-do list for this summer as well. I'll keep you posted.
Mostly I've been working at the camp and reading books in between. I finished Then She Was Gone by Lisa Jewell. I think I mentioned that one here. I've been slowly reading The Flight Attendant by Chris Bohjalian. It's really good. I'm mostly reading at night and first thing in the mornings, but for some reason it is taking me a lot longer to get through this book.
I've also been listening to A Dangerous Fortune by Ken Follett during my commute. It's really good and I've had a hard time stopping it when I get to where ever I'm going. I even think about it while I'm working! It reminds me of people that I've known and allowed to be in my life. How some people will do anything to get what they want, but how good people will always prevail and win in the end. I highly recommend it. Do you want to start the book group up again? I've been thinking about it. Let me know!
Business End of Things
I'll have more information soon on all the July and August events. My next newsletter will be sent out at the beginning of July. There's even an invite to my birthday party!! I've decided that Anna Lee and I will share my birthday from now on. She was 12 weeks old when I got her in October (almost 7 years ago now). So she would have been born sometime in July so why not celebrate on my birthday!!
The Rest of the Story
Things are good here on the homestead. I had the weekend off and I mostly kept quiet. I read. I took a nap. I had walks with Anna Lee. I did some cleaning and some planning for the future. It was nice. I made a pie for one of the staff member's at camp. He saw my instagram and asked me for a pie. I was inclined to oblige him! I got up early one morning and put the pie together. I've missed doing things like that. There needs to be more of that in my future.
The next few weeks are busy now that campers have shown up at camp. Plus I have a couple of days at the library. Then some Chicken Librarian classes. Life is good y'all.
'til next time
