I taught a lip balms and salves class last weekend and it got me to thinking to all those balms and salves I’ve made through the years. I haven’t taught a balms and salves class in a couple of years. It was my bread and butter for a long time, along with making and selling balms and salves. I get asked a lot why I don’t make products anymore. And honestly, it’s a lot of work. I would love to get back into it one day but for now, I will sell some kits and teach classes. But I wanted to share some other recipes. I teach a basic, 3 ingredient balm and salve, but obviously you can add a lot more ingredients and still have a clean, nurturing product. So look below for some ideas and recipes. And check back because I am adding a herbal infusions class to the mix!! Happy making friends!

Vanilla Orange Lip Balm

ingredients:
•1 tablespoon coconut oil
•1 tablespoon olive oil
•2 teaspoons grated beeswax
•2 teaspoons shea butter
•6-8 drops sweet orange essential oil
•1/8 teaspoon vanilla extract

instructions:
1. Place coconut oil, olive oil, grated beeswax, and shea butter into a glass measuring cup.
2. Set the cup down into a saucepan containing a few inches of water to form a makeshift double boiler, making sure no water gets into the glass measuring cup. Heat over medium heat, until the beeswax and shea butter are melted, stirring occasionally.
3. Once you remove from heat, add the orange essential oil and vanilla extract and stir again.
4. Transfer to lip balm tubes using a pipette and allow to cool before capping. Or carefully pour into lip balm tins, filling to the first ring on the tin then allow to cool before capping.
5. Add labels if desired.

This recipe makes enough to fill 9 tubes or 2 1-ounce tins.

Notes:
1. This ratio of oils and beeswax makes a good consistency for lip balm tubes. If using tins, try adding up to another tablespoon of oil to make it easier to use.
2. You can substitute another butter, such as mango or cocoa, instead of the shea butter.

Mint Chocolate Lip Balm

ingredients:
•2½ tablespoons sunflower oil
•1/2 tablespoon castor oil
•1 tablespoon grated beeswax
•4 to 5 chocolate chips
•10-15 drops peppermint essential oil

instructions:
1. Place sunflower oil, castor oil, grated beeswax, and chocolate chips into a glass measuring cup.
2. Set the cup down into a saucepan containing a few inches of water to form a makeshift double boiler, making sure no water gets into the glass measuring cup. Heat over medium heat, until the beeswax and chocolate are melted, stirring occasionally.
3. Once you remove from heat, add the peppermint essential oil and stir again.
4. Transfer to lip balm tubes using a pipette and allow to cool before capping. Or carefully pour into lip balm tins, filling to the first ring on the tin then allow to cool before capping.
5. Add labels if desired.

This recipe makes enough to fill 12 lip balms tubes or 3 1-ounce tins.

Notes:
1. This ratio of oils and beeswax makes a good consistency for lip balm tubes. If using tins, try adding up to another tablespoon of oil to make it easier to use.
2. Castor oil is an important ingredient that gives your lip balm a nice gloss and smooth finish. And, as a FYI castor oil gives soap its lather ability.

That’s it! Super simple. I hope you have fun making these lip balms. Let me know how it goes.

’til next time-
